FreeNAS also isn't FreeBSD, so the requirements of FreeBSD don't apply to FreeNAS. Why exactly it destroys the pool? No one is 100% sure, but it doesn't happen if you run over 8gb of ram and since this is meant to be ran on server grade hardware to begin with it's not an issue worth devoting a lot of dev time to.
